Daniel Burgis is a third-year student of Electrical and Information Engineering. He is pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree.
What made you choose this degree programme?
Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to become an engineer. My A-level grades were not good enough to study Mechanical Engineering – whereas there's no admission restriction for Electrical Engineering.
In which respect have or haven’t your expectations been fulfilled?
The degree programme is just as maths-focused as expected and requires a lot of work. We have hardly any opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in practice, it's all about theory and basics – not what I'd expected at all.
Which aspect of your degree programme do you enjoy most?
The repeated Eureka effect whenever you have worked hard to understand something and eventually realise what we need that for. Electrical Engineering really is everywhere – that's pretty cool!
What has been your biggest challenge to date?
Doing without any real holidays! The semester workload is really heavy, and semester breaks are designated for exams. It's not easy to gather up the necessary motivation over and over again.
What would you like to become after completing your degree?
I would like to work in the medical engineering segment, developing and optimising implants and new imaging techniques. There's still a lot to do in this field!
Which advice would you like to give to students who consider enrolling in this degree programme?
Don't be afraid of maths! You will need it all the time. And don't study it because of future earning potential – you won't be able to make it through the degree programme if you lack serious interest.
